2008 brachte das im österreichischen Graz beheimatete internationale Spitzenorchester JBBG – JAZZ BIGBAND GRAZ mit seinem Erfolgsprogramm "Electric Poetry & Lo-Fi Cookies" erstmals diese einzigartige Melange aus Bigband Jazz, Minimal, African Music und Electronica auf die Konzertbühnen – und begeisterte damit gleichermaßen Publikum und Presse. Die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung notierte: " ...die richtigen Maßstäbe von Aufbruch und Abenteuer". Und die US-amerikanische Weltklasse-Kollegin Maria Schneider bemerkte: "Spectacularly done! Fantastic music, incredible production, evocative, beautiful and so creative..." Im Mai 2010 erschien dazu die DVD "Live@Jazz Baltica", ein Mitschnitt des gefeierten Auftritts der Band beim Festival in Salzau 2009.

2010 präsentiert die JBBG mit ihren beiden Masterminds Saxofonist/Flötist Heinrich von Kalnein und Vokalist/Trompeter Horst-Michael Schaffer mit "Urban Folktales ... And A Rose!"nun die Fortsetzung: die Poesie des zeitgemäß runderneuerten und neben dem Theremin durch elektrische Zither und elektrisch verstärkte Drehleier erweiterten Klangkörpers 'Bigband' dreht sich dabei um das elementarste aller Menschheitsthemen, die Liebe.

Die Kompositionen paaren dieses Mal je zwei solistische Protagonisten: dabei kommen z.B. Saxofonist Johannes Enders, Echo-Preisträger 2010 Henning Sieverts, der österreichische Drehleiervirtuose Matthias Loibner, der slowenische Ausnahmetrompeter David Jarh sowie Thereminvirtuosin Barbara Buchholz u.v.a. ausgiebig zu Wort; die Texte liefern - als Meta-Ebene - die 'Lyrics' der Welt- und Popliteratur: von sephardischen Liedern über William Shakespeare, Pablo Neruda bis hin zu Gertrude Stein...; und die brillanten unterstützenden Visuals kommen wieder von der österreichischen Künstlergruppe OchoReSotto.

In its seventh year of existence the jazz bigband graz under leadership of German saxophonist Heinrich von Kalnein and Austrian trumpeter Horst-Michael Schaffer is definitely a strong and unique voice on the European bigband map. The members of the band comprise of some of Austrians best musicians as well as some of the most prolific soloists from Germany, Slovenia and the U.S.

Their last program 'Joys & Desires', was exclusively written by composer/ drummer and band member John Hollenbeck. It featured the outstanding New York–based vocalist Theo Bleckmann. Together they tore up the house at the 2006 IAJE Convention in New York and performed later that year with great success at the North Sea Festival as well as the German Rheingau festival (together with the Grammy-winning a-cappella group Take 6).

With their newest production 'electric poetry & lo-fi cookies' the band makes a huge leap forward. Composed and produced by both of the bandleaders 'electric poetry & lo-fi cookies' combines the cool electronic sounds of today’s clubscene with the power and sophistication of the 17–piece jazz bigband graz. High-virtuoso and energetic solos are framed by strong melodies and counterpoint, which lead to musical excursions to Minimal Music as well as to Argentina and Africa. As a special guest they invited Berlin-based Theremin artist Barbara Buchholz providing a few very special sounds with her ancient electronic instrument. On top of this leader Horst-Michael Schaffer himself surprises as a superb and convincing vocalist.

Produced at the renowned German Bauerstudios and mixed by Viennese sound guru Dietz with this production the European top-notch ensemble sets another milestone in jazz. European Bigband Jazz on the edge of tomorrow!
